To become a constable in the BSF, the candidate must have completed 18 and not exceeded 23 years of age. The maximum age limit for OBC candidates are 26 years and for SC/ST candidates are 28 years. The candidate is expected to have a minimum qualification of 10th standard pass. He/she is expected to be in a height of 170cms and the weight should be corresponding to height. Either too lean or too hefty candidates will not be considered, with priority, in selection. Other physical eligibility for a BSF constable includes good eye vision, good colour sensibility, proper foot, strong knees and healthy vein. He/she is expected not to wear glasses or lenses. Another major eligibility concern is that the candidate should not be a physically challenged person, because physical power is very vital to be a BSF officer. More than educational qualifications, the mental and the physical power, height, weight and chest measurements will be given priority.

Eligibility criteria
The Border Security Force (BSF) has officers of different grades and each hierarchy has different eligibility criteria.

Payscales:
The pay scales vary from Rs.6000/- for constables to Rs.80000 for the Director General. Each rank has its own range of pay. For instance the pay band for a head constable is from Rs.5200 to Rs.20200 and for a Subedar Major it is from Rs.9300 to Rs.34800..
